Outstanding novel by Graves – marred perhaps by the depth to which he explained beoisario proceedings, structures and so on. I knew the “golden ages” of Greece and Rome pretty well, even a lot of confused stuff about the Roman Republic, but affairs of the Constantinopolitan sixth century empire of Justinian, indeed the whole period between Constantine and the, shudder, Dark Ages were terra incognita.

In he took up a post at Cairo University, accompanied by his wife, their children and the poet Laura Riding. Using classical sources he constructed a complexly compelling tale of the life of the Roman nelisario Claudius, a tale extended in Claudius the God Belisarius, a devout Christian and unwaveringly loyal subject accepted all this without a word of complaint.
But you need deep pockets, the condr values mean they are rarely cheap. Books by Robert Graves. That’s here alright but roert ramp up is longish. He wrote translations of Greek and Latin works, literary criticism, and nonfiction works on many other topics, including mythology and poetry. When he returned, victorious, it was not as a hero. There is the overwhelming destruction of the populace, both rich and poor, loss of family names, estates, wealth, and often life.

In fact, Justinian and Belisarius’ wives had been close friends when they belisariio young. Regardless of Justinian’s ineptitude and unwillingness to commit the men and money needed to prosecute his irresponsible campaigns, Belisarius found a way to triumph. View all 15 comments. Jun 21, Roger Kean rated it really liked it. The story is fun and pulpy, reaching a climax of downright addictive during Belisarius’ initial conquests in Italy. What was most interesting about the book, though, was Graves’ concentration on questions of defense, and the problems associated with martial preparation and national identity in a large and rapidly crumbling multiethnic empire. The book, supposedly written by his wife’s eunuch Eugenius, follows robsrt campaigns in Rome and Northern Africa, chronicling the court intrigues and jealousies that prevent him from winning the cconde that should have been his.
Yet, because there’s so little dialogue, the book becomes a term paper–and a hagiography. In a perverse sense, however, it is also admirable.

The Roman Empire of the West still exists in name only, and Justinian wants to reclaim it but does not have the wisdom or the intelligence to do that. This beautiful edition was produced by The Folio Society London. I have to say that I enjoyed the science fiction classic very much indeed.
