Oct 09, Donn Greenfield rated it really liked it Shelves: I concede that MAYBE he was trying to reflect the double standards inherent in Roman culture, but I didn’t get the impression that he was trying to do that with the rest of the book, either, so why start now? This book was so cut and dry for me. I honestly didn’t mind the inaccuracies, even though I’m a semi huge history buff. On the plus side, it has inspired me to investigate more about some of the leading players. Well written, the story comes alive and is difficult to put down.

Gate major twist toward the end reveals the protagonists to be two of Roman history’s best-known figures, bates readers with some knowledge of the period will have guessed their identities already.
Given what we know about Caesar, this is very likely true. This first book is big on story set up for the series – I genuinely want to finish the series to see how these characters develop into what history has recounted them to be.

It if is a fun read, just don’t go expecting historical accuracy. Marius’s beloved Primigenia legion is declared traitorous and removed from the senate’s legion scrolls by order of Sulla. But as such it is thoroughly a compelling read.
To his cinn subordinates Sulla claims that “he [Julius] reminds me too much of myself” and that there “might be two of Marius in him”. At its heart is the city of Rome, a place of glory and decadence, beauty and bloodshed. In their style of writing, certain books complement certain venues – two examples being Dawkins’ books for coffee shop reading and Michael Palin’s books for holidays.
